ONCE UPON A TIME there were for little Rabbits, and their names were -
Flopsy,
Mopsy,
Cotton-tail,
and Peter.
They lived with their Mother in a sand-bank, underneath the root of a very big fir-tree.
옛날 옛날에, 4마리의 토끼가 살았는데, 그들의 이름은 플롭시, 몹시, 코튼테일, 그리고 피터 였어요.
그들은 커다란 전나무 뿌리 아래에 있는 모래톱 안에서 엄마와 함께 살고 있었어요.

“Now, my dears,” said old Mrs.Rabbit one morning, “ you may go into the fields or down the lane but don’t go into Mr.McGregor’s garden.
“Your Father had an accident there; he was put in a pie by Mrs.McGregor.
“Now run along, and don’t get into mischief. I am going out.”
“사랑하는 얘들아,” 어느날 토끼부인이 말했어요. “너희들은 들판이나 길을 따라 내려갈 수는 있단다. 하지만 맥그리거씨의 정원에는 들어가선 안된다.”
“너희 아빠가 거기서 사고를 당하셨단다. 맥그리거 부인이 그를 파이 속에 넣었지.”
“이제 나가놀아라. 말썽 부리지 말고. 나는 외출할테니.”

THEN old Mrs.Rabbit took a basket and her umbrella, and went through the wood to the baker’s. She bought a loaf of brown bread and five currant buns.
Flopsy, Mopsy, and Cotton-tail, who were good little bunnies, went down the lane to gather blackberries;
But Peter, who was very naughty, ran straight away to Mr.McGregor’s garden.
And squeezed under the gate!
그리고 나서 토끼부인은 바구니와 우산을 들고 숲속을 가로질러 빵집으로 갔어요. 그녀는 한 덩이의 갈색빵과 5개의 건포도 번을 샀답니다.
착한 어린 토끼들인 플롭시, 몹씨, 코튼테일은 블랙베리를 얻기 위해 길을 따라 내려갔어요.
그러나 개구쟁이 피터는 곧장 맥그리거씨의 정원으로 달려갔답니다. 그리고 문 아래 틈으로 비집고 들어갔어요!

FIRST he ate some lettuces and some French beans; and then he ate some radishes;
AND then, feeling rather sick, he went to look for som parsely.
But round the end of a cucumber frame, whom should he meet but Mr.Mcgregor!
Mr. McGREGOR was on his hands and knees planting out young cabbages, but he jumped up and ran after Peter, waving a rake and calling out, “Stop thief!”
먼저 그는 양상추와 약간의 강낭콩을 먹었고요, 그리고 나서 무도 좀 먹었어요;
그리고 나니 배가 좀 아파서 파슬리를 찾으러 갔답니다.
그렇지만 오이밭 끝을 돌았을때 그는 맥그리거씨를 마주칠 수 밖에 없었어요!
맥그리거시는 무릎을 꿇고 어린 양배추를 심고 있는 중이었지만, 펄쩍 뛰며 일어나 피터를 쫓기 시작했어요. 갈퀴를 휘두르면서 소리쳤죠. “거기 서 도둑놈아!”

PETER was most dreadfully frigntened; he rushed all over the garden, for he had forgotten the way back to the gate. He lost one of his shoes among the cabbages,
AND the other shoe amongst the potatoes.
AFTER losing them, he ran on four legs and went faster, so that I think he might have got away altogether if he had not unfortunately run into a gooseberry net, and got caught by the large buttons on his jacket. It was a blue jacket with brass buttons, quite new.
피터는 굉장히 놀랐어요 ; 그는 정원전체를 마구 뛰어다녔어요. 나가는 문이 어디인지 잊어버리고 말았거든요. 그는 양배추 사이에 신발 한 짝을 잃어버렸어요. 다른 한 짝은 감자 사이에서 잃었어요.
신발을 잃고 나서 그는 네발로 더 빠르게 달렸어요. 그래서 그가 불행히도 구스베리 그물에 부딪히지만 않았다면, 그리고 커다란 그의 자켓 버튼이 걸리지만 않았다면 그가 완전히 도망칠 수 있었을거라 생각해요. 그것은 황동단추가 달린 파란색 자켓이었어요. 꽤 새 것이었죠.

PETER gave himself up for lost, and shed big tears; but his sobs were overheard by some friendly sparrows, who flew to him in great exitement, and implored him to exert himself.
MR.McGREGOR came up with a sieve, which he intended to pop upon the top of Peter, but Peter wriggled out just in time, leaving his jacket behind him.
AND rushed into the tool-shed, and jumped into a can. It would have been a beautiful thing to hide in, if it had not had so much water in it.
피터는 길을 잃은 자신을 포기했고 눈물을 흘렸어요. 하지만 그의 흐느낌을 들은 친절한 참새들이 관심을 가지고 그에게 날아와, 그에게 있는 힘껏 노력해볼 것을 간청했어요.
맥그리거씨는 피터의 머리를 들어올릴 체를 가지고 다가왔어요. 그러나 바로 그때 피터는 빠져나왔답니다. 그의 자켓을 벗어둔채요.
그리고 공구창고로 뛰어들어 양동이에 점프했어요. 그 안에 물이 가득 차있지만 않았다면 그것은 몸을 숨기기에 가장 멋진 것이었을텐데요.

MR.McGREGOR was quite sure that Peter was somewhere in the tool-shed, perhaps hidden underneath a flower-pot. He began to turn them over carefully, looking under each.
Presently Peter sneezed - “Kertyschoo!”
Mr.McGregor was after him in no time,
AND tried to put his foot upon Peter, who jumped out of a window, upsetting three plants. The window was too small for Mr.McGregor, and he was tired of running after Peter. He went back to his work.
맥그리거씨는 피터가 공구창고 어딘가에 있을거라고 매우 확신했어요. 아마도 화분 아래에 숨어있을거라고요. 그는 화분들을 조심히 뒤집어서 아래를 살펴보았어요. 그때, 피터는 재채기를 하고 말았어요. “에이취!”
맥그리거씨는 바로 그를 쫓아왔어요. 그리고 그를 발로 밟으려고 했고 피터는 화분 세개를 넘어뜨리면서 창문 밖으로 점프했어요. 그 창문은 맥그리거씨에게는 무척 작았고, 피터를 쫒는 것에 지쳐서 그는 일터로 돌아갔어요.

PETER sat down to rest; he was out of breath and trembling with fright, and he had not the least ida which way to go. Also he was very damp with sitting in that can.
AFTER a time he began to wander about, going lippity-lippity - not very fast, and looking all around.
He found a door in a wall; but it was locked, and there was no room for a fat little rabbit to squeeze underneath.
피터는 쉬기 위해 앉았어요. 매우 숨이 찼고 두려움으로 몸이 떨렸어요. 그리고 그는 가야할 방향을 전혀 몰랐어요. 또한 그는 캔에 앉는 바람에 다 젖어 있었지요.
잠시 후 그는 사방을 둘러보며 빠르지 않은 속도로 주변을 어슬렁대기 시작했어요. 그는 벽에 있는 문을 발견했지만 그것은 잠겨있었어요. 그리고 문 아래로는 뚱뚱한 작은 토끼가 빠져나갈 어떤 공간도 없었지요.

An old mouse was running in and out over the stone door step, carrying peas and beans to her family in the wood. Peter asked her the way to the gate, but she had such a large pea in her mouth that she could not answer. She only shook her head at him. Peter began to cry.
THEN he tried to find his way straight across the garden, but he became more and more puzzled. Presently, he came to a pond where Mr.McGregor filled his water-cans. A white cat was staring at some gold-fish; she sat very, very still, but now and then the tip of her tail twitched as if it were alive.
Peter thought it best to go away without speaking to her; he had heard about cats from his cousin, little Benjamin Bunny.
나이든 쥐 한마리가 돌문 계단위로 숲속의 그녀의 가족들에게 가져다 줄 완두콩과 콩들을 나르며 들락날락 하고 있었어요. 피터는 그녀에게 문을 나갈 방법을 물었지만 그녀는 입에 엄청 큰 완두콩을 물고 있어서 대답할 수가 없었어요. 그저 머리를 흔들 뿐이었지요. 피터는 울기 시작했어요.
그리고 나서 그는 정원을 바로 가로질러가서 길을 찾아보려고 했지만 점점 더 혼란스러워질 뿐이었죠. 바로 그때 그는 맥그리거씨가 물병을 채우는 연못에 도착했어요. 하얀 고양이 한마리가 금붕어를 응시하고 있었어요. 그녀는 매우, 매우 가만히 앉아있었지만 가끔식 그녀의 꼬리 끝이 마치 살아있는 것처럼 꿈틀댔어요. 피터는 그녀에게 말걸지 않고 떠나는게 좋겠다고 생각했어요. 그의 사촌인 벤자민 버니로 부터 고양이에 대해서 들은게 있었거든요.

HE went back towards the tool-shed, but suddenly, quite close to him, he heard the noise of a hoe - scr-r-ritch, scratch, scratch, scritch. Peter scuttered underneath the bushes.
BUT presently, as nothing happened, he came out, and climbed upon a wheel-barrow, and peeped over. The first thing he saw was Mr.McGregor hoeing onions. His back was turned towards Peter, and beyound him was the gate!
그는 공구창고를 향해 되돌아갔어요. 그렇지만 갑자기 그는 가까이에서 괭이질 하는 소리를 들었어요.. 긁긁.. 긁긁… 피터는 덤불 아래로 허둥지둥 숨었어요.
하지만 아무일도 일어나지 않자, 그는 나와서 손수레 위로 올라가서 엿보았죠. 그가 첫번째로 본건 양파를 쟁기질하는 맥그리거씨였구요. 그의 등은 피터를 향하고 있었죠. 그리고 그의 너머로는 문이 있었어요!

PETER got down very quietly off the wheelbarrow, and started running as fast as he could go, along a straight walk behind some black-currant bushes. Mr.McGregor caught sight of him at the corner, but Peter did not care. He slipped underneath the gate, and was safe at last in the wood outside the garden.
MR.McGREGOR hung up the little jacket and the shoes for a scarecrow to frighten the blackbirds.
피터는 매우 조용히 수레를 내려와서 건포도 덤불 뒤로 난 길을 따라 할 수 있는한 최대한 빨리 달리기 시작했어요. 맥그리거씨가 모퉁이에서 그를 목격했지만, 피터는 신경쓰지 않았어요. 그는 문 아래로 미끄러지듯 내려가서 결국 정원 밖 숲속으로 가서 안전해졌답니다.
맥그리거씨는 검은새들을 무섭게 하기 위해 작은 자켓과 신발을 허수아비용으로 걸어두었어요.

PETER never stopped running or looked behind him till he got home to the big fir-tree. He was so tired that he flopped down upon the nice soft sand on the floor of the rabbit-hole, and shut his eyes. His mother was busy cooking; she wondered what he had done with his clothes. It was the second little jacket and pair of shoes that Peter had lost in a fortgnight!
I AM sorry to say that Peter was not very well during the evening. His mother put him to bed, and made some camomile tea; and she gave a dose of it to Peter! “ One table-spoonful to taken at bed-time.”
BUT Flopsy, Mopsy, and Cotton-tail had bread and milk and blackberries for supper.

피터는 큰 전나무의 그의 집에 도착할때까지 달리는걸 멈추거나 뒤돌아보지 않았어요. 그는 너무 피곤해서 토끼굴의 거실 위 부드러운 모래 위에 털썩 쓰러져서 눈을 감았어요. 그의 엄마는 요리하느라 바빴어요; 그녀는 그의 옷이 어디 갔는지 궁금했어요. 그것은 피터가 잃어버린 두번째 자켓과 신발이었거든요.
유감스럽게도 피터는 그날 저녁동안 몸이 좋지 않았어요. 그의 엄마는 그를 침대에 눕히고 카모마일티를 만들었어요; 그녀는 그걸 한잔 피터에게 주었답니다! “한스푼 먹어보렴”
그렇지만 플롭시, 몹시와 코튼테일은 저녁으로 빵과 우유과 블랙베리를 먹었답니다.

✍ 후기
그림체도 내용도 너무 미치게 귀여워서 나도 모르게 "아 진짜 너무 귀엽네" 중얼거리면서 읽음.
특히 고양이가 꼬리를 살랑이며 금붕어를 응시하고 있는 풍경은 무척 아름다워서 예술작품 처럼 느껴졌다.
About 전문 타이핑
그런데 생각보다 내용 전문을 타이핑 하는데 시간이 꽤 걸린다.. 이런 방식으로는 이틀에 한 권 정도를 겨우 할 수 있을 것 같은데, 전문 타이핑 지속 여부는 일단 한 권만 더 해보고 결정해얄듯.
이틀 동안 조각모으기 하듯이 노션에 정리해놓고 최종으로 옮겼다.
근데 옮길 때 편집하기가 귀찮아서 다음 책은 그냥 전문 전체 + 해석 전체 이런 식으로 옮길까도 고민됨.
About 문장번역
문장 번역은 최대한 원문에 가깝게 할지 자연스럽게 의역을 하는게 좋을지 고민이 되었는데, 번역 연습이므로 최대한 자연스럽게 읽히도록 하는 것에 더 주안점을 두었다.
번역을 해보는 것의 장점은 그냥 영문으로만 읽었을 때는 대충 이미지만 그리면서 내용만 이해하고 넘어갔다면, 번역을 하면서는 단어가 다른 의미를 가지고 있지는 않은지, 문장이 어떻게 구성되어 있는지 좀 더 꼼꼼히 보게 되는 것 같다. 느리긴 하지만 꽤 장점이 있는 방식인듯!
About 저작권
그런데 전문을 싣고 몇개의 삽화를 올리는게 저작권 문제가 없는지 모르겠다. 문제가 된다고 하면 수정해얄듯.
About 시간확보의 어려움
이틀간 종일 분갈이를 해야했고, 내일은 문서작성을 할게 남아있어서 쉽지 않겠지만,
그래도 지치지말고 한 문장씩이라도 꼭 모아보자!! 화이팅!
